Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Although Chisum stars John Wayne--playing a benign variation on his Red River empire-builder --he's curiously sidelined in this umpteenth retelling of Pat Garrett, William Bonney, and the Lincoln County War. Sam Peckinpah would direct the world-class version of that götterdämmerung, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, three years later. This version, directed by Andrew V. McLaglen in a slightly less broad vein than usual, is just odd--not least because it omits Garrett and Bonney's celebrated final confrontation. Geoffrey Deuel's Billy is a pleasant juvenile who scarcely seems delinquent, let alone murderously psychotic. Glenn Corbett's characterization of Garrett consists mainly of wearing a seriously BIG hat. There's an irksome rivalry for Chisum's perky niece (Pamela McMyler), and a Dominic Frontiere score that's the Western equivalent of elevator music. Chief scoundrel Forrest Tucker seems bored, but Christopher George, Richard Jaeckel, and Bruce Cabot get some juice into their villainy. --Richard T. Jameson

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - You Don't Mess With John Chisum
John Wayne starring in Chisum,filmed,1970,a true story based on the Lincoln County wars in the 1870's where the young painless Billy the Kid(Henry McCarty)the kids real name, alias William Bonney roamed the badlands of primitive New Mexico, where the name of the game is survival and a mans only chance was his own 44. John Chisum is a rancher who won't tolerate any of Billy's mischief or the crooked business transactions of Murphy(Forest Tucker) and his ruthless gang, consisting of outlaws hiding behind ... Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Chisum better than no Chisum
I don't know where to start other than saying that the movie Chisum is better than having no movie about John Chisum. I'm afraid Hollywood has done another number on history when it would have been just as easy to do a correct film. Where to start? Sallie came West with her father, James, brother's Will and Walter from Denton County Texas. Also her other uncle Pitzer was at the ranch as well. None shown in the film. Sallie never was "back East" and was just a girl of 17 when she came to Roswell (Where ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - classic duke
This movie is classic Duke. I have collected other John Wayne movies and this has his usual company of actors.
The clarity is excellent and the photography is great.
While the actual history of Chisum differs from this screen version, it is a great story.
I recommend this to any collector of the Duke's movies.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "Not Likely"
Chisum DVD

Chisum is a cowboy movie in the old style. It stars John Wayne, as the New Mexico cattle baron, John Chisum, has Forrest Tucker as a greedy merchant, and has Billy the Kid, , and many others in it. Recommended for fans of John Wayne, Forrest Tucker, and cowboy movies.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My favorite John Wayne movie
This is my all time favorite John Wayne movie. Just the right mix of western, romance and action. I have hunted this movie for years before trying Amazon....I'm sure glad I did.
